The Keynote
Musical Juggling, Automata and Combinatorics
Can a scientist help a juggler play music? The musical juggling artist Vincent de Lavenère has spent a decade exploring the possibilities and challenges of a novel musical instrument composed of acoustic musical juggling balls that each play a note when caught. In order to train with his team, he needs some form of musical juggling scores. It is known since the 80s that juggling can be modeled by finite automata, but the real-world constraints pose various modelling and human-computer interaction challenges. The presentation is an adaptation from a wide-audience conference/show performed in schools, theaters, and scientific festivals. The goal is to illustrate, from an actual performing artist, the modeling methodology going through simplification, writing, computing, and simulation.
Bio
Trained at the French Conservatoire National des Arts du Cirque, Vincent de Lavenère is a professional juggling artist with the company Chant-de-Balles. He is particularly interested in the interaction between juggling and music. He has created several musical performances, notably Ballade à 4 and Concerto for 4 Jugglers, in which the jugglers produce the music through the very act of juggling.
Florent Hivert is a professor at University Paris-Saclay, specialist in algebraic combinatorics. His research focuses in part on finding concrete models for abstract algebraic computations, taking various forms, such as graphs, puzzles, and even 3D-printed stacks of shapes. He is also deeply involved in science outreach, particularly through his collaboration with Chant-de-Balles.

FAQ
Do you have any hotel recommendations?
The conference will take place close to Place d’Italie. There are two Ibis hotels nearby that are not too pricey:
- ibis Paris Avenue d’Italie 13ème, 10 minutes walk: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hkJAX8yaHGwatp3S7
- ibis Styles Paris Tolbiac Bibliothèque, 11 minutes walk: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pi6HxQot98J5rH2MA
Otherwise, we recommend looking for hotels near “Institut des Systèmes Complexes” https://maps.app.goo.gl/BXhJ7TUpEjCdZYRj9; there are many around.
